What do we say in the UK when it's really sunny and hot? Well, of course, it doesn't happen very often, but we have a heatwave at the moment. So here are the idioms we might use.

IDIOM: Talking to a brick wall. It can be very frustrating! Do you ever feel frustrated when you're talking to someone as they won't listen to what you're saying or take your advice? Then you can say - it's like talking to a brick wall. Unlike many idioms, this is one where the meaning is fairly obvious from the words, but it's surprising how many learners even at Advanced level have never heard it. Down in the Dumps is a very common idiom. 'To be down' means to feel sad or depressed, and if you are Down in the Dumps, then you are feeling very low. A dump (noun) is a place where refuse, trash, and garbage are placed - rubbish. So, in a sense, your mood is really rubbish. We also use the word 'dump' to describe places that are untidy, dirty and a mess. 'Dump' is also a verb - to dump something is to throw it away, get rid of it! We also talk about dumping our boyfriend or girlfriend! Not very nice! So if someone is down in the dumps, they are miserable, sad, unhappy, depressed, and feeling really low.
